The generosity of the Ohio Valley showed this holiday season, as the Salvation Army Wheeling Corps Red Kettle Campaign enjoyed a banner season.

The kettles are tucked away, but the impact will be felt throughout the year, as this year's drive went above and beyond.

Fundraising started on Nov. 18, where bell ringers were seen collecting donations far and wide.

This year's goal was to raise $100,000 in Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel and Tyler counties.

The community stepped up and donated more than $99,800-- only $138 short of the goal, but still, a 13-percent increase on last year.

"When they see people out there helping others, they want to be a part of that,” said Lt. John Lawrence, corps officer, Salvation Army. “That's really where it's at. We have a great community in the Ohio Valley, and we believe that they know that people are hurting."

There was also a 67 percent increase in volunteers this season -- more than 300 hours extra.

The winners of the kettle competitions were:

-Wheeling Rotary (Civic Organizations)

-Ohio County Sheriff’s Office (Battle of the Badges)

-West Liberty University (Mascot Challenge)

-John Marshall High School (High Schools)

"The Salvation Army on its own can only do some much, but with the community with us, there are untold amounts that we can do," Lawrence said.

So, a big thank you has been sent out, along with the hope that the giving won't stop because the calendar has flipped.

"The holiday season is over, but the need is still there," Lawrence said.
